McKeon Door East worked alongside BIG and Gilbane on a project at Solar One Environmental Education Center in NYC.
McKeon Door East completed the installation of the McKEON ClimateGuard™ IS3020-STC34 Acoustically Rated Insulated Service Door at the Solar One Environmental Education Center, an innovative facility located on the East River in New York City. This 18-foot wide by 11-foot high door assembly plays a pivotal role in the building’s design, providing acoustic separation and energy efficiency.
The Solar One Environmental Education Center is a net-zero energy building situated in Stuyvesant Cove Park, developed by the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC). Designed by Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) and constructed by Gilbane Building Company, Solar One serves as a model for sustainable architecture and environmental education. The center features a solar photovoltaic array, energy storage systems, and flood-resistant design elements, making it a resilient and forward-thinking space for the community.
Role of McKEON’s ClimateGuard™ IS3020-STC34
The ClimateGuard™ IS3020-STC34 was selected for its superior performance in sound control and thermal separation. With an STC rating of 34, this door assembly effectively separates the building’s multipurpose event space (Classroom 1) from Classroom 2, allowing the facility to host two events simultaneously with minimal sound interference. Additionally, it enables energy-efficient operation by minimizing heating and cooling requirements when one portion of the space is not in use—an essential feature in a facility devoted to environmental responsibility.
The ClimateGuard™ offers more than just space flexibility—it is a critical component in supporting Solar One mission. By creating acoustically separated zones, this door assembly enhances the user experience for students, community groups, and visitors alike, while contributing to the overall sustainability goals of the building.
Collaboration and Innovation
This project exemplifies the collaboration of industry leaders with a shared vision of innovation. McKeon Door East worked closely with Gilbane, BIG, and NYCEDC to ensure that the installation aligned perfectly with the building’s design and operational requirements. The result is a seamless integration of technology and architecture that enables optimal space utilization without compromising comfort or energy efficiency.
At McKEON, we are honored to be part of groundbreaking projects like Solar One that set new standards for sustainability, functionality, and community engagement. We are proud to provide solutions that empower architects, builders, and developers to reimagine what modern spaces can achieve—from advanced energy conservation to acoustic separation and life safety.
