Bareman & Associates worked alongside architects at Hamilton Anderson Associates on the new home of WSU’s Department of Theatre and Dance.

Phase one of the project was the construction of a new 500-seat proscenium theatre on Wayne State University‘s Detroit campus. Phase two added adjoining scenic storage areas and costume design studios. Combined with the renovated existing venue, the buildings make up the Hilberry Gateway Performance Complex, a center for the performing arts in Midtown.

When architects at Hamilton Anderson were challenged with separating the stage and auditorium from the backstage corridor they looked to McKEON for the solution. Sound control, the extreme size of the opening and a fire rating were all factors that determined their ultimate choice.

The McKEON Auto-Set® Model FSFD-STC34-M-PC with an STC rating of 34, the highest in the industry, fit the bill. At 12′ wide x 18′ high the fire and smoke rated acoustical assembly easily spanned the opening between the stage and the area behind the performing space. Additionally the vertical acting rolling steel door provided the required 2-hour fire separation.

McKEON is pleased to have played a supporting role in the construction of the future home of the Maggie Allesee Department of Theatre and Dance and the Department of Music on the campus of Wayne State University. Opening night is scheduled for Spring 2023.
