The Illinois Fire Inspectors Association hosted McKEON and distributor, Modernfold Chicago, for a 2 ½ hour seminar on Atrium Design and Compliance.

On April 25th, 2025, McKEON Senior Business Development Manager, Doug Zachary, conducted the seminar as part of their monthly meeting which was held at Palatine Village Hall in Palatine, IL. The IFIA is an ICC Chapter, and all participants received continuing education credits through the ICC Preferred Provider Program.

The seminar focused on simplifying the difficulties of vertical open design by defining several vertical openings in Section 712 of the IBC. The boundary of the atrium was established, and different fire door systems were introduced in order to achieve open design without compromising fire and life safety. These door systems allow for compliant design solutions that reduce or eliminate smoke evacuation systems for the atrium.

The participants were very engaged, which allowed Doug to expand the subject matter to an overview of standards and regulations that oversee the installation, testing and maintenance of fire and smoke rated door systems. Critical information for the Inspectors and Fire Protection Engineers that were in attendance.

As a token of their appreciation, the IFIA presented the representatives from Modernfold Chicago and McKEON with a challenge coin for their participation.
