David Dodge was invited to conduct a seminar for the District of Columbia Department of Buildings.

On June 5, 2024 nineteen DC DOB staff members and two from the DC Fire Department attended a 5-hour ICC/CES accredited seminar presented by Mr. Dodge, our VP or Business and Code Development. The class took place in a building department conference room.

Cameron Ross, Architectural Marketing Associate from McKEON Door of DC, coordinated the event. To start, he sent out timely notification and registration forms. In addition, an outline of the seminar allowed the attendees to prepare in advance for an engaging learning experience.

At the beginning of the seminar each participant was given a 130-page textbook titled, Fire Door Systems, A Guide to Code Compliance to be used as reference during the classroom instruction. Mr. Dodge, certified under the ICC/CES Preferred Provider Program, taught fundamental building code principles found in Chapters 1 through 10 and 30 of the current adopted International Building Code.

David covered the definitions, use, and applications of the five walls of the IBC. Significant class time was relegated to understanding provisions surrounding vertical spaces in structures such as required exit stair shafts, exit access stairways, 2-story spaces and atriums. And, of specific interest to this group, he addressed the acceptance and approved uses of fire and smoke rated fabrics as opening protectives along with rated separation in vertical spaces in the Washington, D.C. marketplace.

Focused discussions, attendee experience and accurate information created a valuable learning experience for all. Each participant received .5 (.1 for each hour) ICC CEU learning units recognize by the International Code Council.
