McKeon Door East worked alongside Gensler and JRM at JPMorganChase’s New Global Headquarters.

Modern architecture continues to prioritize openness—expansive atriums, connected floor plates, and daylight-driven environments that enhance occupant experience. At 270 Park Avenue, the new global headquarters for JPMorganChase, this vision was realized through a collaborative effort led by Gensler and JRM Construction with McKeon Door East.

On the 15th floor of the building, the McKEON® AC8907 fire and smoke-rated coiling assembly was strategically installed to compartmentalize an atrium opening measuring 14’-0” × 14’-6”, maintaining openness without introducing permanent barriers. The system was also designed with two integrated swing egress doors, allowing for safe and code-compliant occupant passage even when the assembly is deployed.

Atrium conditions present a complex challenge: maintaining visual openness while meeting strict fire and smoke separation requirements. Installed at this critical 15th-floor atrium condition, the side acting McKEON® AC8907 fire door system remains concealed within the building envelope and deploys only in emergency conditions.

This approach preserves uninterrupted sightlines and daylight penetration which are key priorities in high-performance workplace design, while still delivering a code-compliant fire and smoke barrier when activated. The inclusion of swing egress doors ensures that life safety is addressed not only through compartmentation, but also through maintained means of egress and occupant accessibility.

Beyond life safety, the system contributes to sustainability goals aligned with U.S. Green Building Council and Green Business Certification Inc. frameworks. By eliminating the need for permanent rated construction, the McKEON® AC8907 fire door system supports deeper daylighting and reduced lighting demand, minimizes material usage and embodied carbon, and enables flexible, adaptive space planning. These benefits align with LEED v5 priorities around energy performance, indoor environmental quality, and material efficiency.

As building design continues to evolve, projects like 270 Park Avenue demonstrate that fire protection no longer needs to compete with architectural vision. The installation of the McKEON® AC8907 fire door system on the 15th floor provides a modern alternative delivering wide-span, code compliant compartmentation while supporting open, transparent, and sustainable design strategies. For architects and developers pursuing high-performance buildings, deployable fire and smoke-rated systems especially those incorporating integrated egress solutions, offer a path to achieving both safety and design excellence.
