McKEON distributor Overhead Door Company of Lancaster worked alongside Stantec and Whiting-Turner on a project at Harrisburg University in Harrisburg, PA.

The design team at Stantec wished to penetrate two different vertical shaft spaces in the new 12-story Science Education Center. However, openness and egress became a combined challenge when providing for occupant safety during a fire emergency.

The first location was at a required exit stair where it pierced the third floor. Conventional deployable fire-rated systems could certainly close openings and provide protection, but once closed how would building occupants egress into the exit stair shaft?

The vertical coiling Safescape® T2000 is a perfect solution for any shaft enclosure where opening protection and egress is required.  A complying egress swing door, flush mounted in an adjacent wall, deploys and locks into position at the command of an alarm condition. Once in place the integral egress door and frame serves as side guides to accommodate a 3-hour roll-down door assembly. Within seconds an opening protective with single or dual egress swing doors stands ready to fight fire and smoke.

Additionally, seventeen vertical coiling Auto-Set® Model FSFD-M-G non-egress fire doors are utilized on floors two through seven. These smoke and fire rated FSFDs provide protection in various sized openings of the 1-hour separation of a complying 6-story atrium. These wide-span opening protectives are always recommended to protect openings where fire and smoke protection is required but egress is not an issue.
