Specified Building Products collaborated on a project with Boston University Facilities Department on their campus.

The Walter A. Brown Arena Memorial Skating Pavilion had an existing sliding door at the rear exterior wall of the facility that was beyond repair. The Facilities Department at Boston University wanted a large, completely clear opening so that the Zamboni machine could enter and exit without difficulty.

The arena has a capacity of 3,806 persons. Should there be a fire emergency, sufficient egress was necessary to accommodate this sizeable occupant load and meet building code requirements.

Finally, the large opening in the exterior wall left the interior vulnerable to inclement weather. The opening protective remains closed and exposed to the elements, opening only to accommodate the Zamboni machine.

After considering all these challenges – size, fire rating, exiting, and climate – Specified’s installer recommended replacing the existing slider with a Safescape® Model T5004. The McKEON Safescape® T5000 is a vertical acting smoke and fire rated rolling steel assembly with single or multiple fixed egress doors.

The T5004 has four fixed swinging egress doors, shown above from the interior of the arena, that provide required egress. Large occupant loads and wide-span openings are easily accommodated with the McKEON Safescape®T5000 — making it the perfect solution for the Walter A. Brown Arena!
