Our Partner in the Pittsburgh Market, hosted a day of building code instruction.

In October, our partner hosted the hosted the AIA 5-hour seminar, Fire Door Systems, A Guide to Code Compliance. David Dodge, VP of Business & Code Development for McKEON was the instructor. Participants spanning the Greater Pittsburgh, Franklin and Erie areas were present. In addition, building and fire officials, and members of the architectural community gathered in the Cranberry Township RLA Learning & Conference Center.

Participants engaged in the interactive course as Mr. Dodge spoke accompanied by slides based on the “Fire Door Systems” workbook. The presentation focused on the 5 walls of the IBC, their openings and opening protectives as detailed in the 2018 Edition of the IBC (International Building Code).

Perhaps one of the most challenging areas of the building code to grasp, enforce, and design is vertical spaces and atriums. David detailed these requirements and provided case study applications to promote greater understanding.

The latter portion of the seminar included a discussion of the “Myths and Facts of Smoke and Fire Rated Curtain Assemblies,” another topic that is difficult to understand and misrepresented within the industry.

A highlight of the event was a fantastic taco bar lunch served in the cafeteria of the conference center. All enjoyed a great day of learning and comradery!
