Skold Door Company worked closely with ISG / StruXture Architects and Larson Construction Co., Inc. on a project at Aldrich Elementary.

Skold assisted the design team at ISG / StruXture Architects with the design of safe rooms at Aldrich Elementary in Cedar Falls, Iowa. With McKEON’s SafeSpace™ 500 technology safe rooms and storm shelters can be constructed to FEMA 361 (3rd & 4th Editions) and ICC 500 (2014 & 2020) Standards without sacrificing natural light and multi-purpose use. Only because of signage are building occupants aware that the classrooms double as tornado safe rooms.

The safe rooms were constructed by protecting large windows in several of the learning studios with SafeSpace™ 500 vertical rolling steel assemblies. These wide-span opening protectives allow abundant natural light into spaces, closing only in case of a tornado emergency.

When deployed, our SafeSpace™ 500 doors provide life-safety protection from wind and wind-borne debris during a tornado or hurricane. With the turn of a key each vertical rolling assembly deploys to protect against wind speed in excess of 300 MPH and sustain design wind pressure up to 252 PSF. The learning studios quickly and easily transform into storm shelters ensuring the safety of faculty and students.
