McKEON distributor Building Specialties Company, Inc. worked alongside Fuqua & Partners Architects and Brasfield & Gorrie on the project.

Fuqua & Partners Architects envisioned a 3-story atrium design for one of two new buildings on the campus of The Alabama School of Cyber Technology and Engineering (ASCTE). ASCTE, in Huntsville, is the nation’s only high school focused on the integration of cyber technology and engineering into all academic disciplines.

McKEON distributor Building Specialties turned to our diverse range of products to help the design team accomplish their goal – to achieve the necessary code compliance yet maintain open spacious areas for student comfort and convenience. Five McKEON Auto-Set® H200 Series horizontal shutters were used to create vertical openness between the three stories and eliminate the need for costly smoke evacuation systems. In tandem with the vertical space atrium two Auto-Set® Model S4000s, configured with double radius curves, were installed to encapsulate the exit access stairwell of the three-story building.

Additionally, a 10′ x 10′ FEMA-rated SafeSpace™ 500 was used to create a basement storm shelter. Closing only in case of emergency, the space doesn’t feel like a storm shelter – until it is required.

This project was a success due to the efforts and teamwork of all involved. Classes have begun at ASCTE’s new facility — the staff and students are extremely impressed with the outcome!
