B.T. Mancini worked alongside HGA and Iron Construction on a project in San Jose, CA.

B.T. Mancini was tasked with updating a McKEON Safescape® T2000 Series vertical coiling smoke and fire door because of a change in building occupancy. To meet new egress requirements, the original 3 ft. wide-span opening protective with egress needed to be enlarged to a 4 ft. wide door with egress swing door.

The original T2000 unit was encased in and finished with surrounding construction. A total replacement would have been costly, requiring extensive coordination and sequencing. Additional trade work would have been needed to perform demo, provide appropriate access, and replace the surrounding finishes.

B.T. Mancini chose to modify the existing T2000. Only the egress door, bottom slats, floating bottom bar, and safety edge/bottom bar assembly were replaced rather than the entire unit. This allowed them to keep the existing barrel, guides, and operator in place, yet be permitted to use the original UL label and maintain compliance.

The T2000 has a UL label certifying the product meets safety and quality standards by a nationally recognized testing agency. Modifying a door with a UL label can be complicated.  Any structural changes to a system that left the manufacturer’s factory with the label applied require that strict protocol be followed in order to maintain the certification and legitimacy of the label.

With direction provided by the knowledgeable experts at McKEON, B.T. Mancini was able to perform the modifications with efficiency and minimal impact to the surrounding construction. Prior to commencement of work, the protocol was published and provided to HGA in order to satisfy the AHJ’s demands and requirements. The result was a complete modification to an existing T2000 unit with minimal cost and total satisfaction for all parties involved!
