AIA Florida hosted their biggest annual event – their Convention & Trade Show – from July 26-30.

More than 500 architects, vendors, partners, and associates show up for nearly a week of networking, continuing education and, of course, the popular trade show. The convention also includes AIA Florida’s Design & Honor Awards Reception & Presentation featuring dedicated videos for each award winner.

This year they returned to the Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress in Orlando. Amenities offered at the recently renovated top tier resort include a lagoon-style pool, award-winning golf course, kayaking and rock climbing.

AIA Florida invited David Dodge, CSI, CDT, McKEON’s VP-Business & Code Development, to participate as part of the Continuing Education sessions offered at the convention. Mr. Dodge presented a 2-hour seminar titled “Advanced FBC: 7th Edition (2020) – Five Walls of the FBC – Guide to Fire Resistance and Fire Protection.

Based on the Florida Building Codes, 7th Edition (2020), this course is designed to equip design teams with a working knowledge of the five walls of the FBC. Authored by Mr. Dodge and submitted to the Florida Building Commission for approval, it is a required course for bi-annual certification for all Florida registered architects. Over 300 people attended the presentation in person.

Using a combination of slides, verbal explanations, pertinent case studies and diagrammatic illustrations as well as personal testimony, Mr. Dodge explained building code compliance in a manner that all could understand and apply.

Each attendee received the workbook “Fire Door Systems, A Guide to Code Compliance” This highly informative 130-page document is often described as a code commentary on wide-span opening protectives.

Feedback was very positive with several attendees remarking, “The best building code presentation I have ever attended.” Thanks to the technical staff and professional development team directed by Wendy Johnson at AIA Florida, the presentation was an engaging, fun learning experience for all.
